UHG is the third most overcrowded hospital in Ireland today with 40 patients on without a proper bed.

According to the INMO’S Trolley/Ward Watch the most overcrowded hospital today is UH Limerick where there are 52 people on trolleys, followed by Letterkenny Hospital with 45.

In total there are 524 people in public hospitals who don’t have a proper bed today according to the INMO.

The overcrowding crisis reaches a milestone this month, with the number of people on trolleys passing 100,000 on November 11.

That figure was hit 17 days earlier this year than in 2018 when it didn’t occur until November 28.

Of that figure almost 7,000 were at University Hospital Galway, with another 1,200 at Portiuncula in Ballinasloe.

The HSE announced its Winter Plan last week which includes €647,000 in additional funding for healthcare services in the west of Ireland.

Emergency rooms are always under extra pressure during the winter because of a greater prevalence of conditions such as influenza and norovirus.
