Planning permission is being sought from the county council for the construction of a new supermarket in Athenry.
Plans have been submitted to the council by RHOC Athenry for a supermarket with associated off-licence at Gorteenacra on the Caherroyn Road.
The single storey supermarket would have a total floor space of 1,781sqm, and the plans also include a car park with 148 spaces, as well as 30 bicycle spaces.
The plans also include 2,350sqm of landscaped green space where the site is bounded by the Clarinbridge River to the east.
Four existing single storey dwellings on the 1.78ha site would be demolished, and a new pedestrian and vehicle entrance onto the Caherroyn Road created.
A planning statement for the project says that it will “bring a new and much needed retail offering to Athenry and its surrounding catchment area, which will create direct and indirect employment within the town itself”.
Part of the site, which also includes undeveloped greenfield lands, was previously part of an approved application to demolish three houses for a commercial car park.
This was approved in 2008, and then permission was extended in 2013, but the development never went ahead.
A Retail Impact Assessment submitted with this application states that it is expected the supermarket will have an estimated turnover of €17.5 million a year by 2025.
A decision on this planning application is due from Galway County Council by January 29 of 2022.
