Plans are in development for an onshore wind farm with a capacity of up to 86MW in the north of County Galway.

RWE Renewables is seeking planning permission for the wind farm development of up to 13 wind turbines at Shancloon, Co. Galway near the county line with Mayo.

The development recently cleared the pre-planning consultation phase at An Bord Pleanála, allowing for a planning application to proceed for a Strategic Infrastructure Development.

A project brief on RWE’s website states that the 689 hectare site is located in the townlands of Shancloon, Cloonbar, Beagh More, Derrymore, Cloonteen and Cloonsheen.

The proposed wind farm would be built roughly 12km west of Tuam, 8.5km northeast of Headford and 3.5km from the Mayo border.

The company states that the majority of the lands within this area are either cutaway bog or in agricultural use, and that this could continue with a wind farm in situ on the site.
