Ireland West Airport at Knock has been awarded €1,931,709 as part of a state aid package to support Irish Airports announced recently.
The government recently announced a package of €26 million in supports for six airports around the country badly hit by COVID-19.
This includes €20 million for state airports at Dublin, Shannon, and Cork. Of which Dublin got the lion’s share at €17,680,000.
A further €6 million was announced for regional airports at Knock, Donegal, and Kerry, which will be provided in two tranches.
This funding announcement covers roughly half of that figure, with the remainder to be allocated this December.
The money is meant to assist airports which lost business due to COVID-19, and the remaining funding for Knock and the regions will be allocated following an assessment by the Department of Transport of eligible losses in the current year to end 2021.
The amount each airport received has been calculated based on their passenger numbers recorded in 2019.
Minister of State and Galway TD Hildegarde Naughton said “I am hopeful that this funding will go some way towards aiding the recovery process in the aviation sector.”
“As travel restrictions begin to lift, I am also hopeful that this funding may assist in restoring connectivity by affording our State airports greater flexibility in their capacity to offer route incentives, in consultation with airlines.”
