Irish Water is replacing over 325 meters of ageing backyard service connections along Munster Avenue in Galway city this week.
The works are being carried out to improve water quality and reduce the amount of water lost to leakage.
They were described as a ‘critical step in conserving a precious resource’ and reducing high levels of leakage which have caused outages for customers.
Irish Water thanked all customers in Munster Avenue who have engaged with them and assisted in the provision of the backyard services programme.
Speaking about the benefits of the project, Gerry O’Donnell, Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water, said that old backyard service connections continue to impact communities right across Ireland, causing low pressure and supply disruption.
“Replacing these old water mains and service connections in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground,” he said.
“We would like to thank the local residents in Munster Avenue for facilitating these works and working with us to provide a more secure and reliable water supply for generations to come.”
