Construction of a new Radiation Oncology Unit for University Hospital Galway is expected to be completed by 2022 according to the HSE.

At the recent Regional Health Forum meeting, city councillor John Connolly had a written question asking the status of plans for the new Oncology Centre for UHG.

In a written answer, Assistant National Director HSE Estates for the west Joe Hoare said that the project has been included in the HSE 2020 Capital Programme and has been granted Capital Allocation in 2020.

A contractor has been chosen for the project, and site works commenced earlier this month on September 7.

Planning permission for the project is currently due to expire next month, and the HSE is seeking an Extension of Duration from Galway City Council for an additional five years.

This EOD application also states that construction is expected to be completed by December 2022.

When completed the oncology centre will include seven radiotherapy treatment vaults, a brachytherapy suite, two CT rooms, on-treatment support and ancillary physics, treatment planning and administration facilities.

The centre is being built on the site of the former acute mental health unit at UHG.

“The construction is to be completed by 2022 and a further period of time is required for the commissioning of the equipment,” Mr Hoare said.
