The new specialist menopause service in Galway will be located at University Hospital Galway and will be operational by autumn, the HSE has confirmed.
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly announced last year that the new clinics in Galway, Cork and Limerick will be approved, funded and developed in 2022.
While the majority of menopause care will continue to be provided through GPs, these clinics will provide another layer of medical care for women with complex symptoms.
Cllr Parsons said that the confirmation that the clinic will be up and running in autumn is ‘great news’ for women in the West of Ireland.
The councillor has raised a number of questions regarding a specialist menopause service at the Regional Health Forum, and she said that she is ‘delighted’ with the confirmation.
“It is imperative recruitment of key personnel be swiftly progressed now to meet the needs of women requiring referral and to urgently address women’s health issues at this key transitional phase in their lives. Women’s care can’t wait,” said Cllr Parsons.
In addition to seeing women who meet the clinical criteria for referral to the service, the clinical team will also reach out to provide advice and guidance to GPs in the community.
