Galway County Council has been allocated more than half a million euro to improve outdoor public parks and recreations areas across the county.
The Additional Outdoor Infrastructure Fund 2021 has seen the county council granted €501,000 for twelve projects.
Of this, €125,000 will go towards the provision of bins, picnic tables, seating, benches, and cycle parking at Traught Beach.
Another €108,000 for improving Palace Grounds in Tuam with better picnic areas, wheelchair accessible areas, repairs to paths and handrails, and more.
€100,000 will be spent improving Oranmore Village Centre, and €50,000 will go towards improvement to Lough Corrib pier in Headford.
Fairgreen Ballinasloe and Loughrea Park have each been allocated €45,000 towards new picnic facilities, while €25,000 will go towards similar works at Portumna Park.
Lastly, funding has been allocated for public realm improvements at Leenane (€15,000), Spiddal (€25,000), Clifden (€12,500), An Tra Mor, Coill Rua, An Spiddal (€20,000).
Galway East TD Seán Canney congratulated the county council for its successful application for funding to enhance local community amenities.
“This funding is vital to improve our public parks, beaches and outdoor public realm for use by all including people with disabilities is in additional to the Active Travel funding already allocated to the County”.
