The number of people in Galway receiving the Pandemic Unemployment Payment this week has decreased according to the latest figures from the Department of Social Protection.
There are now 8,120 people in receipt of the PUP in Galway – 243 fewer than last week.
Nationally, just over 153,000 people have received the payment this week, which is down by almost 70% since February.
Over the past week, 4,400 workers closed their claims with almost half of these working in the Accommodation and Food sector.
Commenting on the figures, Minister Heather Humphreys said that it is heartening to see more people return to work each week.
“We know from past experience that when the economy recovers, it doesn’t always move at the same pace for everybody,” said the Minister.
“’Our Pathways to Work Strategy’ ensures that supports will be provided to enable people to get back working again, be it through upskilling in their area of expertise or training for an entirely new career path.”
Minister Humphreys said that as the economic recovery continues and new jobs are created, they want to ensure that people in receipt of income supports have the training, skills and most importantly the confidence to take on new roles.
“The Pathways to Work Strategy will give people the support they need to secure quality, sustainable employment,” she said.
The county with the highest number of people receiving PUP is Dublin which stands at 58,215. It is followed by Cork (13,536) and Galway (8,120).
