General Practitioners will begin receiving COVID-19 vaccines today to be administered to people over the age of 85, as the the third phase in the government’s vaccine rollout gets underway.
Over 80,000 people will receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine over the next seven days.
GP surgeries which have over 200 patients aged 70 and above will vaccinate people within the medical centre itself, while for practices with fewer than 200 people over 70 years, the vaccines will be given at GP-led Vaccination Centres.
Galway Senator Seán Kyne explained that each GP practice will register, book in and administer to their own patients from the Centre.
“For GP practices with fewer than 200 patients aged 70 or over, the practice will partner with another, larger practice to use the larger facilities. However, GP practices will still take care of their own patients,” said Senator Kyne.
Following this phase, the programme will move on to vaccinating those aged 80-84, 75-79 and 70-74.
