There have been 90 additional deaths related to COVID-19 reported by the Department of Health today, along with 928 new confirmed cases.
Of today’s cases, 53 are in Galway, where the the 14 day incidence rate now stands at 616.1 cases per 100,000 people.
The deaths reported today were among people aged from 48 to 99 years old, with 83 being the median age of those who died.
“This highly infectious disease is having a severe impact on the most vulnerable in our society and we must continue the good work we are doing to suppress it,” said Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer.
Dr Holohan said that while the decline in daily incidence rates of COVID has begun, the “volume of disease” in communities remains extremely high.
As of 2pm today, 1,750 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised in Ireland, of whom 216 are in ICU. There have been 65 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.
There have now been a total of 3,066 deaths related to the disease in Ireland, and 189,851 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.
Another 6 cases linked to the South African strain have been detected the CMO said, adding that “all cases are being followed up by public health teams in line with the latest ECDC guidance”.
“The downturn in incidence has been achieved through the determination of people across the country to stay at home, to work from home and to avoid meeting and socialising with others.”
“It is imperative that everyone continues to strictly adhere to the public health advice to protect ourselves and our loved ones from this highly-infectious disease.”
