There have been 3 additional deaths related to COVID-19 reported to the Department of Health today, along with 1,167 new confirmed cases.
Of the cases notified today, 71 have been confirmed in Galway, the fourth highest level behind Dublin (263), Meath (142), and Cork (137).
There have been 846 confirmed cases in Galway in the past fortnight, and the incidence rate in Galway now stands at 327.8 cases per 100,000 population.
There have now been a total of 53,422 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland, and the pandemic has claimed 1,868 lives in the state.
Validation of data at the HPSC has resulted in the denotification of 1 confirmed case, which is reflected in the national total.
As of 2pm today there were 314 patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in Ireland, of which 13 are in University Hospital Galway and Portiuncula Hospital.
There are 34 patients in Intensive Care with COVID-19 in Ireland, none of whom are in Galway’s hospitals.
Of the cases notified today:
- 538 are men / 627 are women
- 64% are under 45 years of age
- the median age is 33 years old
- 263 in Dublin, 142 in Meath, 137 in Cork, 86 in Cavan and the remaining 539 cases are spread across all remaining counties
“The behaviour of every individual is the most effective defence we have against the spread of COVID-19,” said Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer.
“Everyone needs to stay at home, other than for essential reasons. Follow the public health advice and treat everyone that you come into contact with as though they are a close contact of someone with COVID-19 – keep your distance, avoid meeting others.”
From midnight tonight, Galway and all of Ireland will be entering lockdown again with a move to Level 5 restrictions, which means no travel beyond 5km from your home except for essential reasons, and all but essential retail to close.
No social gatherings of any kind are permitted in your home or garden under the restrictions, while pubs, restaurants, and cafés may operate by takeaway only.
