Twenty-seven new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Galway, the highest number of new cases reported in the county for over a week.

The Department of Health reported a total of 395 new cases across the Republic, and one additional death related to the disease.

Of the additional cases reported today, 65% are under the age of 45 and the median age is 35.

There are four people at University Hospital Galway with the virus, one of whom is in ICU, and 0 confirmed Covid cases at Portiuncula.

Speaking this evening, Dr Tony Holohan said that not every part of the country has experienced the same reductions in disease incidence.

“For example, Donegal’s 14- day incidence is at 281 per 100,000, compared to the national average of 135 per 100,000,” he said.

“The country as a whole can succeed in suppressing this disease to low levels in the coming weeks.

“We have achieved a great deal of suppression over the Level 5 period, the coming weeks offer us an opportunity to drive transmission down further.”
