Galway City Council is seeking new expressions of interest from potential new providers of homeless accommodation.

The council is currently seeking property available to lease or otherwise acquire to use for homeless accommodation until Spring of 2021.

It aims to help provide emergency accommodation to single people and couples in order to “safeguard” from people without proper homes from having to sleep rough.

In order to do this the council is seeking “persons, companies, and organisations”, who have suitable accommodation such as hotels or guesthouses which are available to licence or lease.

A guidance document for the Expression of Interest says any property must be able to accommodate at least 35 people at any time, and be within 3km of the city centre.

The period of this agreement would be between July 2020 and April 2021, and during that time the property would have to be “exclusively available for use by Galway City Council”.

Social care support services for the people being accommodated would be provided by local homeless service providers, including on site staffing.

The Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government will provide the funding for any deal struck, but the lease or agreement would be between the property owner and the service provider.

The deadline for expressions of interest from interested parties for this is Wednesday, June 17.
