There were 248 homeless adults in Galway across the city and county last month, the latest government report shows.

This is an increase of eight people compared with June and twelve more than the same period last year.

The data from the Department of Housing shows that across Galway, Mayo & Roscommon, there were 86 families in emergency accommodation from July 25-31.

Of these, 52 were single parent families. They included a total of 191 children and 126 adults.

Nationally, 7,431 adults were homeless during the week from July 25-31, with 4% of the total being in Galway, Roscommon and Mayo.

Of the homeless adults in those three counties, 13 were women and 163 were men, and 52 were aged between 18 and 24.

A total of 240 of the 293 homeless adults in the West were Irish citizens.

Dublin had the highest number of homeless adults with 5,209, accounting for 70% of the national figure.
