Independent Galway-based grocer Joyce’s Supermarkets is celebrating 70 years in business this week.
The first shop was opened by Patrick C Joyce in 1951, starting as a small operation from a room at Church Road in Headford.
It largely operated as a travelling shop, delivering groceries directly to rural households – but the operation has expanded significantly over the past seven decades.
The company now employs over 500 people in the county across ten supermarkets and a central warehouse in Claregalway.
To celebrate 70 years in business, Joyce’s Supermarkets is offering seven new, extra-special deals in all of its stores over this weekend – one for every decade.
“Our business began in 1951 as a small grocery store founded by my father on the site of our current Headford store,” said Pat Joyce, Managing Director of Joyce’s Supermarkets.
“Seventy years is a notable achievement and milestone for our family business. While the retail environment has shifted over the years, community remains at the heart of the operations at Joyce’s Supermarkets.
“We are grateful for the support of our customers, including generations of the same families that would have who gotten their weekly shop from the ‘travelling shop’ sixty and seventy years ago. We look forward to continuing to serve the local community.”
Aisling Joyce, Director of Operations at Joyce’s Supermarkets added: “While there are many differences between the world in 2021 and the environment we operated in seven decades ago, our main focus has always been on our customers and making shopping a memorable experience for them.
“Shopping has been a huge part of people’s lives during the pandemic and our staff have provided a welcome and friendly presence for our customers during this difficult period.”
Joyce’s Supermarkets operates ten supermarkets in Galway, with branches in Headford, Knocknacarra, Athenry, Tuam, Inverin, Ballybane, Fr. Griffin Road, Doughiska, Oranmore and Oughterard.
